The Power Gauge doesn't rate every symbol you can search. If you've looked one up and don't see a rating, it's almost always because that security falls outside what the system is built to evaluate β not because anything is wrong with your account.
π‘ Good to know: Whether a symbol is rated reflects our data coverage and methodology only. It isn't a judgment about the security itself, and Chaikin Analytics doesn't provide personalized investment advice.
β What the Power Gauge Rates
The Power Gauge Rating is designed for two kinds of securities:
- U.S.-listed individual equities (common stocks) that have enough trading history and available data.
- Equity ETFs, which are rated by evaluating the underlying stocks the fund holds.
If a symbol isn't one of those two things, it typically won't carry a rating. Here's a closer look at the most common reasons.
π« Why a Symbol Might Not Be Rated
- It's a closed-end fund or other pooled vehicle (not an equity ETF). Closed-end funds trade like stocks on an exchange, but they're pooled investment vehicles β not equity ETFs β so there's no standard basket of underlying stocks for the system to score. This often comes up with midstream/MLP-focused funds (for example, a fund holding Master Limited Partnerships), which also carry unique structural and tax characteristics that fall outside standard equity-rating criteria.
- It's not an equity ETF. Because ETF ratings work by evaluating the equities inside the fund, ETFs that aren't equity-based (for example, bond or commodity funds) don't have the underlying stock holdings the methodology relies on.
- It doesn't have at least a year of trading history. The rating needs a sufficient track record to evaluate a security's behavior and trends. Newly listed stocks and recent IPOs often won't be rated until roughly a year of data is available.
- It's an over-the-counter (OTC) stock. Securities traded over the counter rather than on a major exchange tend to be less liquid and less consistently reported, which makes them difficult to evaluate reliably.
- It's a foreign / non-U.S.-listed stock. Stocks listed outside U.S. markets may have limited or inconsistent data available, so they may not receive a rating.
- The necessary data isn't available. In some cases we simply can't source complete, reliable financial and market data for a symbol. Since accurate data is essential to a sound evaluation, the symbol won't be rated until that data is available.
β οΈ Only U.S. equity ETFs receive full Power Gauge Ratings. Other fund types may show limited information or no rating.
